Best Foods to Eat in Mazatlán

  1. Shrimp wrapped in bacon and stuffed with cheese.  When I first moved to Mazatlán in 1998, I discovered this rich and heavenly dish, one of the specialties here.  I ate it everywhere I dined for the first few months until I suddenly realized I should back off the frequency for good health.  But if you’re visiting Mazatlán for just a week or so, do yourself a favor and order it at least once!
  2. Ceviches.  Living in Mazatlán turned me on to eating shrimp ceviche.  Remember, when you’re in Mazatlán, you’re in a shrimping village.  Let’s face it, how often will you find yourself in a shrimping village?  Whether you order shrimp or seafood ceviche, you cannot go wrong.  Like me, you’ll be turned on to ceviche forever!
  3. Aguachiles.  This is another one of those “only in Mazatlán” specialties that you simply must try during your visit.  Picture a righteous shrimp cocktail marinated in green chile and lime with onion and cucumber.  I love this dish!
  4. Suaves Marshmallows. These aren’t your standard sit-by-the-campfire-and-roast-on-a-stick marshmallows. Suaves are melt-in-your-mouth marshmallows, made with sugar, grenadine, and vanilla, coated with toasted ground coconut. Mazatlecos have been eating them for more than 50 years.  Today suaves are made in a marshmallow factory operated out of the Garcia family home, and I would strongly recommend a visit. You can learn the recipe and watch the manufacturing process. The best part is buying several bags of suaves for you and your friends. Plus how many Instagram pictures have you posted from a marshmallow factory in Mexico? Exactly!
