- Horseback riding on the Beach. There’s something to be said for riding horses on the beach. Stone Island is a great place for a laid-back ride along the ocean. The cost is cheap by U.S. standards. Top 7 Reasons to Visit Stone Island
Website - Chill-out. Because Stone Island is off the beaten track and you need a boat ride to get there, the beaches are rarely crowded. The water is generally calm, with miles of pristine beach. During the week, you’ll have it all to yourself. On weekends, you’ll enjoy an awesome local scene with live mariachi and banda music. Great restaurants line the beach, offering fresh shrimp and seafood.
- The Local Ferry – I love taking the local ferry from Mazatlán to Stone Island or vice versa. It costs only 30 pesos round trip, which is a helluva lot cheaper than taking a taxi in traffic each way. Plus the boat takes only 10 minutes. Locals sometimes bring their pigs and roosters on board, and that’s part of what makes the experience so special!.
- Eat & Drink on the Beach. Stone Island is lined with palapas and casual restaurants right on the beach, where you can order fresh shrimp and fish, Pacificos and fresh-cut coconuts. Some of my longtime favorite places to grab lunch are Lety’s, Victor’s, Playa Brujas and Molokay, but you can’t go wrong with any of them. Some of the spots even have showers and Wi-Fi, so you can post photos that will make your friends and family eat their hearts out, wishing they could be with you!
- Dance to the Music. Weekends are the best time for dancing, singing and letting loose with the locals over a few micheladas! Lively local energy, music and authentic Mexican experience!
- Walk or Bike. Many operators offer walking and biking tours of Stone Island. My friend Daniel Romero Pelayo, owner of Bluefoot Tours, studied the history of Stone Island and offers a Tropical Bike Tour that is one of the best. As part of the tour, he asks a local woman to show you how to make a delicious Mazatlán delicacy!
- Banana boats, snorkeling equipment, catamarans, surfboards, paddle boards, and ATVs are all available for rent along the beach and even at some of the beachside restaurants.
